Swan Hill Sobering Up Centre Opening

Opening of the Swan Hill Sobering Up Centre

Friday 27 March | 11:00am – 1:00pm | Swan Hill, Wamba Wamba Country

Under a clear, sun‑filled sky on Wamba Wamba Country in late March, community came together to celebrate the official opening of Ngwala’s Swan Hill Sobering Up Centre – a moment marked by pride and deep cultural significance. The day opened with a heartfelt Welcome to Country from Aunty Steph, followed by a powerful Smoking Ceremony led by Traditional Owner Nakia Firebrace, setting a respectful and reflective tone for the celebration ahead. The ceremony grounded the occasion in culture, healing, and community strength.

Attendees were moved by emotional and honest speeches from Uncle Ronald Briggs and De‑Joel Upkett, who spoke openly about the ongoing need for culturally safe sobering up services and the importance of Ngwala’s strong and trusted presence within community. Their words highlighted not only the challenges faced, but also the power of community‑led solutions grounded in culture, care, and respect.

Aunty Vicki Clark and Uncle Tony McCartney shared stories of Ngwala’s early days and their beautiful involvement in the organisation’s history. Together, they cut the sash, marking not just the opening of a physical space, but a significant moment of healing, connection, and hope. This centre stands as a testament to the dedication of an incredible and deeply respected team, committed to supporting community with dignity and care.

Surrounded by stunning local artwork and shared pride, the opening was a powerful reflection of what can be achieved when community, culture, and compassion come together.
