At Winja Ulupna, healing and transformation often happen through connection – sharing a space, sharing experiences, and supporting one another along the journey. Community living is at the heart of what we do, and every day we see the women encourage, uplift, and cheer each other on.
This was certainly true for Sonya and Michelle, who arrived at Winja just days apart and have walked much of their recovery journey side by side. As they prepare to graduate from the program this week, they were treated to one of our favourite traditions: a pamper day at the hairdresser. After a well-deserved day of being spoiled, Sonya proudly shared that she felt “a million bucks!”
This special experience is made possible alongside Sam, our wonderful Financial Counsellor, who supports the women to budget and save so they can invest in themselves and enjoy this milestone independently.

Graduation week also includes a celebratory dinner, a meaningful opportunity for the women, staff, and community to come together, reflect on their journeys, acknowledge their achievements, and share one final meal before the next chapter begins. We were also honoured to have Shane join us to conduct a smoking ceremony, recognising the courage, strength, and determination shown by both women throughout their time at Winja.
Sonya leaves the program stronger, healthier, and more connected with her family. She also achieved an incredible financial milestone, saving over $1,000 during her stay with the support and guidance of Sam.
Michelle arrived at Winja without a place to call home. This week, she leaves with the keys to her very own fully furnished house, a remarkable achievement and the beginning of an exciting new chapter.
We are incredibly proud of both Sonya and Michelle. Their resilience, commitment, and growth remind us every day why Winja Ulupna is such a special place & truly a ‘Safe Haven.’
